Bauera rubioides is named after Ferdinand Bauer, the natural history artist who accompanied the botanist Robert Brown on his voyage around Australia with Matthew Flinders. Bauera rubioides is commonly found growing in wet areas such as wet rock faces and creek banks on sandstone. It forms a dense mass 0.5 - 1.5m high and can cover 3-4m of ground.

The stalkless leaves are in opposite pairs, each divided into 3 leaflets. They are slightly serrated and sparsely hairy.

The flowers of Bauera rubioides are pink-mauve, 12-18mm wide, with yellow stamens. There are usually 8 petals, but the number varies. The flowers appear bell shaped from above, hanging downwards on long slender stalks.
